Mr Percentage’s supporters were also considering cheering now but they only dared a kind of murmur of agreement. The Mathematical Magistrate was a little disappointed because he didn’t quite know who to glare at threateningly. Also it was obvious Mr Percentage’s supporters weren’t even going to give him one chance to shout, “SILENCE IN COURT!!!”

“Right, we’ll have a vote,” said the Mathematical Magistrate. “Those who think 1/2, 1/4 and 1/5 are easier to understand as fractions put up your hands.”

About half the crowd put up their hands.

“Hmm,” Hmmed the Mathematical Magistrate, studying the crowd very carefully this time. “Those who think 1/2, 1/4 and 1/5 are easier to understand as 50%, 25% and 20% put up your hands.”

About 50% of the crowd put up their hands. The Mathematical Magistrate glared at them threateningly to make up for lost glaring earlier on.
