The Armillary Sphere in the musem shows the sun travelling around the earth, as this is what people believed during the Renaissance when it was made. We now know that the earth travels around the sun. This period is what we recognise as a year, although the earth revolves on its own axis once every day. This applet shows the current areas of day and night across the world as the earth spins on it's axis.

This is a Mercator projection of the world showing the current areas
of day and night. The map will be updated every five minutes as long
as this page remains loaded.
