EIGHTY-ONE

Roman Emperor Titus Flavius Vespasianus
son of Vespasian
died this year.

They called you
'the darling of the human race'.
You were handsome and popular.

The Colosseum, where gladiators fought to
     the death
was completed while you ruled,
most of it still standing today.

You ordered the building of baths in Rome
and when Mount Vesuvius erupted
you lavished your wealth on the victims.

Well done, Titus.

Earlier in your life,
you were
a great Roman General.

'Great Roman General' which means you
     were
very good at getting Roman soldiers to kill
     people
who didn't want to be in the Roman Empire.

Your father, Emperor Vespasian
asked you to besiege the city of Jerusalem.
And you did.

You ended up killing thousands of Jews
burning down the city
and smashing up the Temple.

Look here,
next to the ruins of the Colosseum in Rome
stands your very own arch: The Arch of
     Titus.

And here on the side, is a beautiful carving
of your soldiers marching through Rome
carrying things.

There! The seven-candle candlestick for
     Hanukah,
the Golden Menorah taken from the Temple
and brought to Rome to say, 'We won.
     We won. We won.'

Well done, Titus.

When you were younger
you had a Jewish girlfriend,
Berenice.

When you became
Emperor,
you dumped her.

Nine times nine goes to make EIGHTY-ONE
And it shows how square numbers are done
Times the number you pick
By itself- that's the trick,
And the answer's the square, oh what fun!
