Trainee maths teachers in England will be offered some extra money to remedy the shortfall in trainee mathematics teachers, the government said.

The Making Mathematics Count report written by Professor Adrian Smith in February 2004 gave many recommendations on how to solve the maths teaching crisis, particularly the shortage of specialist mathematics teachers.
According to him, "mathematics is of central importance to modern society" and its status as such should be reflected in the pay given to mathematics teachers.
The Government, in its response to the Report, says trainee maths teachers should get a £1,000 premium on the normal £6,000 bursary.
